Letter to the Editor: Protecting our children

In the Luhk sisters’ case a whole day went by before anyone even knew they were missing. I have a suggestion that might make such information available more quickly and perhaps help avoid further situations involving this tragic result.

Each school bus driver could be provided with a cell phone and a list of all of the children who ride to school on his or her bus along with a list of phone numbers (home and work) of the parents or guardians of each child. The bus driver would keep track each day of the children that board his or her bus in the morning and if any are absent will immediately call the parent or guardian and notify them of the absence of their child. In most cases the parent or guardian would probably be aware of their child’s absence on the bus and the bus driver would be able to discount any problem. In a case, however, like that of the Luhk sisters, there would be immediate notice and perhaps immediate investigation leading to a positive result.
