Letter to the Editor: The NMI deserves another chance

The U.S. and the laws they have implemented over the past few years have had added a tremendous burden to the people of the CNMI and there seems to be nothing that anyone there can do about it. The textile and clothing industry has all but dried up after U.S. law cut back on Headnote 3(a).

The next thing that has happened has been the threat to take away the immigration and labor control by the feds and the imposition of a federal minimum wage has all but dried up the island. Many of the residents have moved away from the islands because they have had increased difficulty dealing with the failing economy.

It has all been because of the U.S. interference in CNMI affairs that has led to this mockery. The people of the CNMI are not like the people of the United States and what the U.S. is trying to do is take away any chance of a recovery by the people in this region.

I appeal to the President Obama to halt the chastising of the people of the CNMI. It was not the people of the CNMI who were the violators but many did turn their heads in the other direction while many bad things occurred. I think the youth and the young leaders of the present should be given the opportunity to straighten out the mess their parents and relatives allowed to happen.

The people of the CNMI are going to have all that they have had over the past three decades fade away and the only effort they have going is a lawsuit from their governor and a few locals. I think if you can get a hold of the leaders in the USCIS and have them hold off the takeover for another decade or so, the people can rise up and show they are worth the risk.

I think that the U.S. should not be viewed as the ideal example to the people of the world in this regard because there are more than 12 million illegal aliens living in the U.S. with no end in sight. The people of the CNMI have held off illegal immigration to their islands for decades and have done their best to keep their islands’ intact. Please give them another chance to correct any wrongs of the past.
