Letter to the Editor: Waft by the Sea

This Waft by the Sea/Mugen was constructed without first securing all the necessary permits from the respective government agencies, and was denied the permit to operate in this area as a non-conforming development. Without first consulting the villagers of Tanapag, the proponents of this restaurant then sought to change the zoning designation of Tanapag Beach by requesting for a variance from the Zoning Board. This would have greatly altered the landscape and tranquility that the villagers have long enjoyed about their beach. The overwhelming majority of the villagers oppose this rezoning effort and want nothing more than to preserve the beauty of this part of their village.

The variance would have resulted in a significant increase in traffic on the part of customers, delivery trucks, and other service vehicles in the immediate vicinity of Tanapag’s beach front/park, endangering the lives of all who make use of the recreational area and seriously disrupting the village’s heretofore normal ambience of peace and quiet.

On behalf of all the people of Tanapag we would like to thank the board members and herewith express our gratitude and appreciation to Henry Hofschneider, board chair, and Elizabeth Rechebai and Joe Limes, board members, for their courage and respect of the wishes of the Tanapag villagers in voting to retain the residential nature of that part of the village.

Of the remaining board members, David Igitol recused himself; voard member Isidoru Cabrera voted in favor, and board members Herminia Fusco was off-island.

We also appreciatethe time and effort many community members spent in filling out the zoning questionnaire and signing the petition to limit development in our quiet residential village.
