Saipan must reinvest in tourism’s future

THE Mariana Islands are blessed with natural beauty that few destinations can rival. Their crystal-clear waters, dramatic cliffs, and unhurried lifestyle continue to draw Korean visitors in search of rest and renewal. Many still describe the Grotto as “like heaven” and recall with gratitude the warm hospitality of hotel staff who welcomed their families. These remain Saipan’s timeless strengths.

But alongside the praise are concerns we cannot ignore. Visitors point to high costs — such as $30 taxi fares from the airport to Garapan — and the expense of meals and shopping. They compare Saipan to Vietnam or Thailand and question why their money does not go as far here.

Infrastructure also leaves a troubling impression. Dilapidated buildings, outdated signage, half-finished projects, and roaming stray dogs all send a signal of neglect. Lengthy immigration lines and warnings about safety concerns only add to visitor frustration. These negative experiences threaten to overshadow the island’s natural charm.

Yet, tourists also highlight what makes Saipan different: no traffic, no large crowds, clean oceans, and a slower pace of life. Some even appreciate the absence of mass tour groups, saying it allows them to enjoy the island more peacefully. These are rare and valuable qualities that Saipan can leverage — if we choose to act.

The lesson is clear: natural beauty alone cannot sustain our tourism industry. If Saipan hopes to remain competitive in the region, we must reinvest. This entails repairing infrastructure, ensuring fair and transparent pricing, enhancing airport and immigration services, and expanding recreational opportunities for visitors. Tourists want to feel that their spending contributes to community growth, not that it disappears without lasting benefit.

Saipan still has the opportunity to shine as a world-class destination for healing. But without reinvestment, we risk falling further behind. The time for excuses has passed. The time for action is now.
