AS we celebrate this year’s Mental Health Awareness Month or MHAM under the theme “Wellness in Action,” I can’t help but reflect on how wellness looks different for each of us — and how often, it’s the small things that keep us grounded. For me, wellness found a surprising home on the pickleball court.
It started off as a casual way to stay active, but quickly became something more. Something about the game — the satisfying whack of the paddle, the shared laughter after a clumsy shot, or how it naturally brings people together, no matter who they are — started to ease the weight of the day. It’s become a space to breathe, to move, and to heal.
We call ourselves the Pickleballers, a group of everyday people who found community through a sport that asks for nothing more than a paddle and an open heart. And what’s beautiful about it is anyone can join. No age limits, no fancy gear — just people showing up for themselves and each other. That, in itself, is Wellness in Action in its purest form.
At NMPASI, through our Protection & Advocacy for Individuals with Mental Illness program, we work with individuals living with mental health conditions to make sure they’re treated fairly and have equal access to the support that they need. A lot of the time, people think advocacy is all about paperwork or the legal stuff — but really, it’s also about community. It’s about being present, listening, and creating space where people feel like they belong. And sometimes, those connections happen in unexpected places — like out on the pickleball court.
Wellness isn’t always about treatment or therapy — more often than not, it’s about friendship, connection, and the freedom to be seen and heard. Whether it’s through our PAIMI services, inclusive community education, or supporting individuals navigating complex systems, NMPASI continues to advocate for a world where everyone has the right to feel well and belong.
So, if you’re looking for a small step toward wellness, maybe grab a paddle and come find us. You’ll be surprised what a little game and a lot of heart can do.
For those interested in MHAM activities across the CNMI, check out the official calendar of events shared by the Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation and the Community Guidance Center Facebook page. There are activities happening all month long — from summits and radio shows to community runs and wellness block parties — on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota. This will all kickstart with the proclamation signing on Wednesday, April 30, 2025 at 9 a.m., Crowne Plaza Resort.
If you or someone you know needs support navigating disability or mental health-related systems, our team at NMPASI is here to help. Visit us on the 5th Floor, Room 505, Marianas Business Plaza in Susupe, Saipan or call us at (670) 235-7273/74.
