9 artists top Marianas Commuter Terminal Art Contest

THE artworks of nine visual artists will soon welcome island visitors at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport.

The nine are the Marianas Commuter Terminal Art Contest winners:

Greg Elliot

Irineo David

Beatrix Susan Doyle

Victoria Joy Sewell

Joseph Weaver

Jiyun Kim

Emerito Lumba

Joanne Merrick

Denglian Zhang Stinson

Each received $1,500 cash.

For the Marianas Commuter Terminal Art Contest, the Commonwealth Ports Authority and Hong Ye Rental and Construction solicited entries, and called on artists to create work that celebrated “the rich cultural heritage and stunning natural beauty of our islands.”

Fifty paintings from Saipan, Rota, and Tinian were submitted, depicting a variety of subjects, from scenic landscapes to historical portraits.

On Friday, Sept. 13, the winners were announced.

“This was an opportunity for CPA to get the public involved and showcase the CNMI’s artistic talent,” said Leo Tudela, CPA executive director. “It will hopefully make the CNMI proud to know that our own community was included in the beautification of the terminal for all inter-island travelers to enjoy.”

Marianas Variety will create large prints of the winning paintings, which will be displayed at the airport’s commuter terminal.

A special feature detailing the story behind the winning paintings will be highlighted in a future edition of Variety.
