AmeriCorps: The CNMI’s Youngest Generation of Teachers

The AmeriCorps program is a program intended to better the scores and reading levels of elementary students through the means of high school student mentors, and to reach out to the community as an entity to lend help in events. This volunteerism program offers much more than what meets the eye. A cool way for students to earn community service hours, receive volunteer hours, and provide direct services to students, AmeriCorps brings the joys of teaching to the surface.

The idea of AmeriCorps is to place high school students into the after school programs offered by elementary and junior high schools to teach and guide kids who struggle with reading. And for those students considering education as a major, this program enables you to glimpse into the lives of teachers and offers a firsthand experience in the teacher position.

As a whole, the AmeriCorps program aims to help student mentors reach a set goal of 675 hours or more aiding students and the islands to then in return get federal aid for post high school education.  Events in the community include the March Against Cancer, Kick Butt Parade, Mother Read and Father Read, community clean ups, Project Familia, Home-Front support, visitations and read-a-loud stories to young patients at CHC, PTSA reading nights to support more parents to attend, and much more.

Living by this motto, “Getting Things Done,” the AmeriCorps will continue to serve the CNMI both educationally and community wise.
