Cancer prevention: Ways to reduce your risk

Here are some steps to reduce the risk of cancer and improve your overall health.

Lifestyle changes

If you smoke or chew tobacco, stop. This is the best thing that you can do to reduce the cancer risk. Lifestyle changes can be a challenge but take it slowly and start with just one or two changes at a time.

Here are some suggestions:

• Quit all tobacco use.

• Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and other high-fiber foods.

• Eat more vegetable protein such as tofu.

• Lose weight if you need to.

• Become more physically active.

• Lead an active life. You can go for walks, engage in gardening, and do other activities. You can join a walking or biking club or do errands on foot or bike. Leave your car at home.

• Cut exposure to cancer hazards.

• Get cancer screenings as needed.

• Improve your diet.

Warning signs

Learn the warning signs of cancer and see your doctor immediately if you notice any of these signs:

• A change in bowel or bladder habits

• A sore that won’t heal

• Unusual bleeding or discharge

• A lump in the breast or elsewhere

• Difficulty swallowing

• Noticeable changes in a wart or mole

• A constant cough or hoarseness
