Contest encourages youth to say no to alcohol and marijuana

(Press Release) — Asia Pacific Education Services, in partnership with Island Training Solutions, is inviting residents throughout the Commonwealth to participate in a creative video competition aimed at preventing underage alcohol and marijuana use.

The competition encourages youth and community members to use their creativity and storytelling skills to raise awareness about the dangers of underage substance use and inspire young people to make healthy, positive choices.

Participants are challenged to create an original 45 to 60 second video that motivates youth to remain alcohol- and marijuana-free while highlighting how positive decision making can benefit their health, education, opportunities, and future success.

Contestants are encouraged to be creative, bold and impactful in delivering their message. Videos may include personal stories, humor, dramatic presentations, special effects, or other innovative approaches that encourage making healthy choices and living a substance-free lifestyle.

The competition is open to three divisions:

• Middle School Division (Ages 11-14)

• High School Division  (Ages 15-18)

• College/Adult Division (Ages 19+)

Entries will be evaluated based on creativity, message, and overall impact. Awards will be presented to first-, second-, and third-place winners in each division. Additional special awards will be given for:

• Best Use of Humor

• Best Message/Impact

• Best Production

Participants may enter individually or as part of a team of up to five members.

Videos may be submitted in any language; however, English subtitles are required.

Registration for the competition closes on July 3, 2026, and all video submissions must be received by July 17, 2026.

About the competition

The video competition is part of ongoing effort to educate youth and the broader community about the risks associated with underage alcohol and marijuana use. Research shows that alcohol and marijuana use during adolescence can negatively affect brain development, learning, memory, decision-making, and mental health. Early substance use is also associated with increased risks of addiction, academic difficulties, impaired judgment, accidents, and long-term health consequences. Through this competition, organizers hope to empower participants to create messages that encourage healthy, substance-free lifestyles and informed decision-making among young people throughout the CNMI.

This program is supported by federal funds under the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through a sub-grant award from CHCC-Community Guidance Center.
