Feel the drama of Winter’s Tale

William Shakespeare is and will always be remembered through his plays, his poems, his novels and everything that he wrote about.

Shakespeare defined love in different ways that captured hearts and brought tears as just by reading his poems during literature classes or act in a drama he wrote.

Allow him to amuse you once again by watching a new generation of actors and actresses of  Mount Carmel School Theater Club perform in his renowned Christmas love story and drama, called a “Winter’s Tale.”

Synopsis

As narrated by MCS theater club adviser, Galvin Deleon Guerero, “Winter’s Tale” takes place in the fairy tale kingdoms of Sicilia and Bohemia, whose two respective kings, Leontes and Polixenes, are childhood friends who take turns visiting each other each Christmas.

The play opens with a Christmas celebration in King Leontes’s Sicilian court, in which King Polixenes meets the pregnant wife of Leontes, Queen Hermione.

Tragedy ensues when King Leontes suspects King Polixenes and Queen Hermione are having an affair and accuses Hermione of carrying the child of Polixenes.

Will Leontes and Polixenes be reconciled?  What will happen to their kingdoms?  What will happen to Hermione and her unborn child?  These questions form the conflict for the remainder of the play, reaching a thrilling climax in the play’s final musical performance.

“Winter’s Tale” is MCS Theatre Club’s 25th production since its inception in 1996. It is being directed by the club’s founder and advisor, Deleon Guerrero, known by the club as Mr. G.

A special production

Theatre Club veterans and seniors, Ryan Ortizo, Keolester Buenpacifico, and Jalayne Benavente play King Leontes, King Polixenes, and Queen Hermione, respectively.  The play also features several supporting characters and dozens of extras.

Deleon Guerero said the story of “Winter Tale” stands as one of Shakesphere’s most innovative plays defying Elizabethan theatrical conventions and telling a compelling tale of love, jealousy, loss and redemption. He also noted that it is his favorite play.

“In my opinion, it’s Shakespeare’s best story, and it effectively blends the best elements of both comedy and tragedy.  While his comedies are too light and his tragedies are too heavy, this play strikes just the right balance,” he explained, when asked what makes the play different from their previous productions.

He added he wanted the play “to be done right” because it is his favorite and that is the reason why it is only now that the play will be staged.

“This is the right time.  I feel the Theatre Club is ready for it,” he said. “This may be our best show yet and I guarantee everyone will enjoy it, young and old.”

According to Mr. G, the production of the play has continued to manifest the same passionate commitment that Theatre Club members have always had for performing arts.

Although rehearsals have been difficult, Mr. G said the experience have also been very invigorating and rewarding.

An invitation

Mr. G said he has always contended that the best show MCS theater club has ever staged was Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and his favorite was “Anastasia”. Both plays were staged on 2005.

Now, it looks like “Winter Tale” will be both the favorite and the best show ever, he notes.

With the amazing script, phenomenal musicians, stunning art design, and a superb cast and crew, this holiday musical is a must see for everyone in the community.

He is inviting everybody to watch the show on December 4 and December 5 at Hibiscus Hall of the Fiesta Spa and Resort.

The play will feature musical performances from the award-winning Saipan Southern High School Manta Band and The Wise Men.

Tickets are available from cast and crew members or at Mount Carmel School Business Office. Advance purchase of tickets is strongly recommended.
