Halloween, the high school way

When asked to share their costume ideas for Halloween 2010, students came back with everything from the girly to the nerdy to the just plain “Gaga.” For example, take Ivy Perrano, a former Marianas High School student, who frolicked around in what initially appears to be a Yellow Power Ranger costume. Her intention, however, was to look like Scorpion, a male character from the videogame Mortal Kombat. Power ranger or gamer, though, it cannot be argued that Ivy’s costume was definitely a bold one.

Many students, like senior Josef Hofschneider, put their own spin on some classic Halloween costumes. Case in point? The quintessential nerd. As a member of the infamous Swagger Crew, Josef never fails to show up to school in the most current styles. But for Halloween, he strut the school halls in his typical matching shirt-short-shoes outfit embellished with “broken” geek glasses, a pair of suspenders, and his shirt tucked into his belly button-high jeans.

He definitely did Steve Urkel some justice.

Flashy and audacious as many of the costumes were, however, it’ll always be the lady that takes the cake…Lady Gaga, that is. Amber Roberts, a Saipan International School junior, put on her best “Poker Face” for her school’s Halloween dance. Amber’s costume was complete with a structured mini-dress, lacy fingerless gloves, fishnet stockings, “hater-blocker” shades, and of course, Lady Gaga’s platinum blonde hair. Now there’s something for the “Paparazzi.”

To children, Halloween is the glorious day when they get to walk the streets as princesses and pirates toting heavy bags of delicious candy. To teenagers, however, the holiday is seen more as the perfect opportunity to just let loose, lower our inhibitions, and take our freedom of expression out of the closet. I mean, we could wear kooky outfits any day of the year if we wanted to. But at least on Halloween, we have a legitimate excuse to do so.

Oh, and for those of you who didn’t dress up this past October 31st? Well, there’s always next year. We hope to see you in your Disney princess ball gowns, vampire capes, and Justin Bieber wigs… But please, keep it PG-13. The sexy fireman outfit can wait ‘til college.
