Indulging in local treats and island favorites

Driving up to the corner of Isa Drive and Talafofo Road on Capital Hill will lead you to a snack bar which sells native foods that has remained on top of the list as the island’s favorites for the past decades.

Even before you come into the bar, the pleasant aroma of home-baked goodies emanating from the oven will assail your nostrils and set your gustatory senses in motion.

Formerly Esco’s Bake House, the Tun Goru Snack Bar which celebrates its first year anniversary since it reopened is your one-stop shop for favorites like apigigi, bibingka, chicken kelaguin, Man’ha biscuits, potu, tamales, titiyas, pan tuba, beef or tuna empanada, twist donuts and more. Tun Goru’s top sellers are the soft and fluffy bibingka and potu. It leaves an aftertaste that makes you crave for more even when you know you have had enough.

My favorite is the apigigi and I can never get enough of this steamed and grilled delicacy made from young coconut meat, fresh coconut milk, and tapioca.

Move on to the line of Tun Goru’s famous sandwiches, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, egg burger cheese, ham and egg, grilled cheese and egg or tuna sandwiches.

The crunchy Butterfinger Cookies is the most popular and sought-after by customers in the cookies section but you should also try Tun Goru’s other cookies like the Guzuria, Rosketti and Chamorro cookies.

Soups are also available daily varying from corn soup, Charakilis, Aruskatdo and Miso soup.

A new product which is fast becoming a household word especially among kids is Tun Goru’s Ice Cup in strawberry flavor.

Carmen T. Cabrera, daughter of the late Gregorio Camacho Cabrera and Escolastica Tudela Cabrera who will be turning 80 on Feb. 10, took over the reins of the bakeshop to continue serving the community with the island favorites.

“We vary our food everyday so our customers will have a wide range of choices,” Carmen Cabrera said.

Tun Goru also accepts special orders for Angel Cake, Cheese Cake, Sponge Cake, Ahu, Lantiyas and birthday cakes.

You can stop by Tun Goru’s Snack Bar anytime with your engines running and pick up your favorites, or you can park and enjoy your meal inside the snack bar. Tun Goru’s delicacies are also available at Shell Dandan, Shell Puerto Rico and Marg’s Kitchen, near Mt. Carmel Cathedral in Susupe.

Tun Goru reopened its doors to the public in Jan. 13, 2009. Yesterday, they had scheduled a raffle draw to pick out five lucky winners from among the customers who will win gift certificates and a book about the life of Cabrera’s father.

Tun Goru Snack Bar is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and from 9 to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
