TOMORROW, March 15, marks a remarkable 20-year milestone for Saipan’s beloved coffee shop, Java Joe’s. That’s 20 years of serving the Saipan community with warmth, nostalgia, and exceptional coffee.
To celebrate the occasion, Java Joe’s is offering a weeklong discount of 10% on all menu items from March 15 to 22. It’s a fitting tribute to two decades of dedication to quality, customer service, and creating a space where everyone feels like family.
In Dandan where it is located, Java Joe’s is more than just a coffee shop; it’s a home away from home for residents, families, and professionals alike. From its humble beginnings as a simple coffee shop to its current status as a bustling hub for breakfast, lunch, and snacks, Java Joe’s remains true to its mission: creating a space where everyone feels welcome.
Java Joe’s story began in 2005 when Manju Pandey took over the business in 2007, which was previously a smokehouse. The previous owner had decided to move the business to the Philippines, but Manju saw an opportunity to create something special for the local community. What started as a small coffee shop with just seven employees has grown into a thriving establishment with 14 dedicated staff members, thanks to the increasing demand for its expanded menu and consistent quality.
Manju, who has a rich background in the culinary and hospitality industries, brought her passion for creating a welcoming environment to Java Joe’s.
“My business is not about me,” she says. “I want customers to feel at home, to feel welcomed and not intimidated. If something is working, why change it?”

This philosophy is evident in the shop’s nostalgic decor, complete with a vintage jukebox—a rare sight in modern restaurants.
“Back in the day, almost all restaurants had jukeboxes,” Manju recalls. “I guess we’re the only ones who still have one.”
Customized coffee
One of the secrets to Java Joe’s enduring popularity is its commitment to consistency and quality. For over 20 years, the shop has used the same blend of coffee beans from Marianas Coffee, a custom mix created exclusively for Java Joe’s.

Java Joe’s manager Kathleen Tolentino is a seasoned coffee professional with 24 years of experience, including 20 years at Java Joe’s.

But Java Joe’s is more than just coffee. Over the years, the menu has expanded to include breakfast, snacks, and lunch—offering something for everyone.
“We want customers to stay and enjoy the space,” says Manju. “It’s a place for families and friends to hang out.”

The shop is also known for its flexibility, often customizing meals or drinks to suit individual preferences—even if the item isn’t on the menu.
“We remember regular orders,” Kathleen adds. “That’s why people keep coming back.”
A day in the life
A typical day at Java Joe’s begins early, with staff arriving at 6:30 a.m. to prepare for the 7 a.m. opening.
“Even at 7 a.m., we get pizza orders,” Kathleen shares. “Cars are already waiting for coffee before people head to work.”

Many staff members have been with Java Joe’s for years, and the shop even hires high school students through a cooperative program, providing them with valuable work experience while contributing to the local economy.
The shop stays busy throughout the day, serving everyone from churchgoers to professionals, and even high school students. Java Joe’s is particularly popular among locals, as its location near the airport makes it a convenient stop for many.
Manju’s hands-on approach and dedication to her customers have been key to the shop’s success.
“We never say no to our customers,” she says. “We follow their preferences, which is why our menu is so flexible.”
This customer-first mentality has earned Java Joe’s a loyal following, with some patrons returning again and again for over 20 years.

“We’ve got kids who [have already] graduated, came back, and are now working professionals,” Kathleen says with a smile. “They still recognize me.”
A family business built on love
Java Joe’s is truly a family affair. Manju’s husband, Mahesh Thapa, has been her partner in the business from the beginning. Although he is now in New Hampshire with their children, his influence is still felt in the shop’s operations. The couple’s four children are spread across the globe, from California to London, but Java Joe’s remains a central part of their lives.
This sense of family extends to the staff as well.
“They’re my backbone,” Manju says of her employees. “Without them, I am nothing.”

Looking to the future
As Java Joe’s celebrates its 20th anniversary, Manju has big plans for the future. “We’re looking to open another branch in late 2025 or 2026,” she reveals. The anniversary celebration from March 15 to 22 is just the beginning of an exciting new chapter for this beloved landmark.
For Manju, Kathleen, and the entire Java Joe’s team, the shop is more than just a business; it’s a labor of love.
“We are very happy here,” Kathleen says. “That’s why we stay.”
