February book recommendations available at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library:
• Children: George Washington: Father of Our Country, a First Biography by David A. Adler
Summary: David A. Adler brings to life the man behind the great soldier and statesman, and unveils the dignity and humility that were the backbone of the public figure, lauded as “first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his fellow-citizens.”
• Children: They, She, He Easy as ABC by Maya Gonzalez and Matthew SG
Summary: They, She, He easy as ABC shows that including everyone is all part of the dance. It’s easy. It’s fundamental. As the dance begins the kids proclaim, “No one left out and everyone free,” in a sing-song rhyme about inclusion. This sets the stage for readers to meet 26 kids showing us their dance moves.
• Children: Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor
Summary: Winner of the Newbery Medal, this remarkably moving novel has impressed the hearts and minds of millions of readers. Set in Mississippi at the height of the Depression, this is the story of one family’s struggle to maintain their integrity, pride, and independence in the face of racism and social injustice. And it is also Cassie’s story— Cassie Logan, an independent girl who discovers over the course of an important year why having land of their own is so crucial to the Logan family, even as she learns to draw strength from her own sense of dignity and self-respect.
• Children: The Elephant Girl by James Patterson and Ellen Banda-Aaku with Sophia Krevoy
Summary: #1 bestselling author James Patterson and award-winning author Ellen Banda-Aaku deliver an unforgettable story of a girl, an elephant, and their life-changing friendship — perfect for fans of The One and Only Ivan, Pax, and Because of Winn-Dixie. Inspired by true events, The Elephant Girl is a moving exploration of the bonds between creatures and the power of belonging.
• Teens: Nevertheless We Persisted by Amy Klobuchar
Summary: A powerful collection of essays from actors, activists, athletes, politicians, musicians, writers, and teens, including Senator Amy Klobuchar, actress Alia Shawkat, actor Maulik Pancholy, poet Azure Antoinette, teen activist Gavin Grimm, and many, many others, each writing about a time in their youth when they were held back because of their race, gender, or sexual identity — but persisted.
• Adults: Acceptance by Emi Nietfeld
Summary: Both a chronicle of the American Dream and an indictment of it, this searing debut exposes the price of trading a troubled past for the promise of a bright future. Told with a ribbon of dark humor, Acceptance challenges our ideas of what it means to overcome — and find contentment on your own terms.
