NMC, through its Educational Talent Search program, provides them with tutors for their extracurricular and academic activities, including assignments, projects and research papers.
Some of the tutors are NMC students.
Helping hand
ETS also provides personal and academic counseling, according to the program’s guidance specialist Theresa Taylor.
Taylor provides academic counseling to students on a one-on-one basis to discuss the students’ grades.
Taylor also sends out intervention letters to students and parents encouraging them to come in for assistance.
There are also students who come to ETS to seek assistance on completing college admission and financial aid applications.
Services
The services offered by ETS include academic, financial, career, or personal counseling.
ETS helps students enhance their study skills as well as how to take and pass an examination, including the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the American College Test.
The activities include career exploration and cultural activities, a visit to area colleges and vocational training centers, financial aid workshops for students and their parents, and assistance in completing financial aid applications, as well as academic support for students of limited English proficiency, tutorial and peer tutoring.
Participants
According to some students participating in the program, ETS tutors are highly capable and effective.
“I understand my work better now and my grades are improving,” said Joan Bandales of Hopwood Junior High School.
Bandales has been with the program for about a year now.
Allison Madamba, 16, of Saipan Southern High School said ETS helped her “to be on top of my schedule.”
She said the ETS office is a place for her to concentrate on her homework or review for her exams.
Devonalyn Cruz, 15, of Mount Carmel School said she has been with ETS for almost two months only but feels that she is already doing better in school.
“The tutor’s break it down until I understand [the lesson] better,” she said.
