With the money the movie-making industry’s raking in with the success of comic-book adaptations, like Iron Man and The Dark Knight, moviegoers can expect an influx of super-hero movies in the years ahead, and while some people are well informed on the major heroes like the Hulk, or Spider-man, they also forget about the other super-heroes in the comic book universe. Here’s a small list on some comic-book adaptations you should look out for, and some updates on the well known heroes.
Batman 3
There is no official name for this one yet and despite the death of Heath Ledger, the development wheels have started to roll with a possibility of filming next year. The main cast will return to reprise their respective roles; as for new characters or villains, there are no updates so far. Nolan aims this three-quel to wrap the series up.
The Avengers
Slated for a May 4, 2012 release date, this is a powerhouse of a movie that will weave different super-heroe franchises into one. Joss Whedon ( Director of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Firefly) is taking the reins for director and has re-written the script for the movie. The line-up of heroes in the film will include: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and The Hulk. There’s no word on Edward Norton’s return as the hulk, but as for the rest of the cast, you can expect them to return along with the head leader of the Avengers, Nick Fury played by Samuel L. Jackson.
Deadpool
Remember the humorous wise-cracking katana-wielding mercenary in the summer blockbuster X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Well, the character has proven to be a fan-favorite among a small community and is now getting a stand-alone movie with Ryan Reynolds reprising his role as the” Merc with the Mouth.” Although the character appeared to have been warped and killed in Origins, fans are told that this movie will not have any relation to the Origins, and while production is slow, the movie has a scheduled release somewhere in 2011. So far, the writers of Zombieland are handling the script carefully; there is no director currently attached for this movie as of now.
Spiderman
(500) Days of Summer Director Marc Webb is now taking Sam Raimi’s place to direct the new, rebooted web slinger franchise. This will not have any continuity to the previous Spider-Man installments and Tobey Maguire (and along with the rest of the cast) will not reprise their roles. This movie will focus on Spider-Man’s webbed adventures while he’s a teenager in high-school instead of being a young adult.
The First Avenger: Captain America
The leader of the Avengers will be played by “Johnny Blaze” Chris Evans. It is slated for a July 2011 release and will be directed by Joe Johnston (The Wolfman) This movie is fast tracked and is planned to tie-in with the 2012 film, The Avengers. It will serve as the foundation for the film, and will also explain the introduce Nick Fury.
Superman
With the mediocre success of Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns, the development for another Superman movie has slowed to a crawl. But development has begun recently with David Goyer (The Dark Knight) penning a script with Christopher Nolan watching over development. It is unclear if Brandon Routh will return to reprise his role and it’s almost unlikely that Bryan Singer will return to direct.
