ONE hard-working, rib-grilling, father and son team will walk away with an American Gourmet 1280 Offset Smoker as Indies division champions in this year’s Budweiser King of the Grill competition.
The contest takes place on Saturday, June 17, starting at 5 p.m. during the Taste of the Marianas Food Festival and Beer Garden at Garapan Fishing Base. The smoker comes courtesy of Triple J Saipan.
In the Indies division, pairs of fathers and sons will go grill-to-grill to see who cooks the tastiest ribs.
According to the rules and regulations, winners of the Indies division are judged based on style and presentation, ingredients and marinade, and, of course, taste.
In addition to the smoker, the champions of the Indies division will win $300 while the runners-up will take home $200 and sponsor prizes, and the 2nd runners-up will receive $100 and sponsor prizes.
Jay Santos, general manager of Triple J’s Five Star Wholesale Foods and Payless SuperFresh, is happy to see the love of the grill taking center stage at the competition on Saturday.
“The King of the Grill competition has been going on for many years now and it’s great to see it come back after not having the event for a few years,” Santos said. “This event has highlighted some great cooks in the community that do it for love and not for work. We’re very happy to be a part of the Indies competition that will bring a father and child together to see who can make the best BBQ ribs. We hope the winner enjoys the BBQ grill/smoker for Father’s Day!”
Aside from the community-level Indies division competition, pros will be competing in the Chefs division at Taste of the Marianas as well.
The public is invited to take part in selecting the winner of the Chefs division. Voting ballots will be available at the Taste of the Marianas fairgrounds where community members can sample the food being prepared for competition.
