Uke Jam to be held at American Memorial Park

The goal for the program is to promote another form of arts and culture that the American Memorial Park enjoys doing as it had done in the past.

“People of all ages are welcome to join in the Uke Jam,” said Park Ranger Nancy Kelchner.

“This is a free form gathering of like minded folks who enjoy playing, learning, and listening to Ukulele music,” she said.

The National Park Service is the primary sponsor with volunteer Louis Wabol as its event coordinator.

“There is not much in the way of the organizing the event, just folks playing and singing together in a great environment,” said Kelchner.

The Uke Jam is an open call for performers. With single or group performers, anyone could jump on stage show their skill of music in front of a crowd.

“This is a public event. Small groups of players will be scattered around the grounds and a microphone will be provided if neither anyone nor the groups should like to play on the stage. Basically, we will have a sign-up sheet for folks who desire to perform on the stage and I mean, anyone may play on stage in front of the audience,” said Kelchner.

The event was the brainchild of Wabol, who is a retired teacher. He thought the event would be a great way for teens to have fun in during the long summer break.

“Mr. Wabol suggested this activity. He is a retired teacher and thought that having a Ukelele Jam would be a great way for young people and families to get together on a nice summer evening and play, learn, and especially have fun!” said Kelchner.

“The cultural art of playing the ukulele is very old. This is a nice way to keep cultural heritage alive and well,” she said.

“We are prepared for an enjoyable evening this Saturday at the American Memorial Park Amphitheater from 5 to 7pm. Even if the weather turns towards rain, the event will happen nonetheless,” she added. “Our community and neighbors are cordially invited to play and learn new techniques or you can just sit and enjoy the music. This is our first ukulele jam and so there is no process in developing this event. We are not having a juried selecting of artists. This is free to everyone to come and watch and play their music.”
