2010 census operations begin

Census activities will officially begin on April 1, 2010.

“We are looking forward to having all equipment and materials in place very soon”, said Juan Borja, local office manager for the 2010 CNMI Census.

“All staff members are currently being trained and are making preparations for the Census in April.  We will have an official opening once the last items arrive from Washington, D.C.,” he added.

With the management and administrative staff in place, the first round of hiring is now complete.

All applicants who were not hired will be automatically placed in the pool for future hiring and will not need to re-apply.

“With over 400 applicants, we were very pleased with the initial response we had for the 2010 Census and so we have created a special testing day for all who applied for positions in September.  Each applicant will receive a letter with the testing date, time and place within the next week,” Borja said.

In early December, a 2010 CNMI Census Job Fair will take place on Saipan, Tinian and Rota as the local Census Office searches for the over 350 employees that will be needed.

Employment duration varies from several weeks to several months beginning in early January.

All information will be available next week on 2010 CNMI Census tab on the CNMI Department of Commerce Web site at http://www.commerce.gov.mp or by calling the local Census Office at 288-3027/23.

Office hours are Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the office is located on international terminal loop next to the Saipan international airport.

CUC to perform system maintenance in Dandan

(CUC) — The Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s power division is scheduling to perform systems maintenance on laterals in the Dandan homestead area (Kiya1) on Nov. 28, beginning at 7:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.

Gary P. Camacho, CUC power division manager, said the power interruptions will be required for the safety of the linemen as they perform their work and will be isolated to laterals only.

He said this maintenance project will incorporate the replacement of approximately 75 deteriorated pole top pins.

The deteriorated pins are of steel composite and were installed nine years ago and have now exceeded their life span, he said.

“Because of their age and extensive exposure to the elements they require replacement to reinforce the circuit,” he said.

Furthermore, due to the consistent ocean salt spray in that area, the new replacement pins have fiberglass shafts and are expected to be more dependable under the conditions, Camacho said.

The line crew will be working in many areas throughout the day and will only interrupt power to a certain lateral to perform the necessary repairs and re-energize the lateral when the repairs are complete.

CUC apologizes for any inconvenience the power interruptions may impose on the community and their consumers and will continue to work diligently to minimize future interruptions, he said.
