A Buddhist memorial service at the pavilion

The area for barbeque and grill was turned into an altar where candles were lighted up and food and a variety of gifts were displayed.

The concrete slab was turned into a table where vegetarian dishes were spread.

A bigger memorial service was held in the deceased’s hometown in Nepal with family members, relatives and friends, according to Karchung Lamini, whose mother passed away last month.

Lamini said her brother and sister also held memorial services in their hometowns in Nepal.

Because she could not join her family in Nepal, Lamini held a separate memorial rite on Saipan where she has been residing and working for 12 years already.

The ceremony was held at a pavilion so her friends and fellow Buddhists could join her.

The food and gifts were those that her mother liked when she was still alive, Lamini said.

She said she felt connected to the world during the memorial service for her mother.
