SAIPAN’S Immanuel United Methodist Church in Chalan Kanoa invites all to join a candlelight peace vigil on Tuesday, Sept. 21, from 7 to 7:30 p.m., its media release stated.
This non-political, non-religious, is not directed against any specific war and will only emphasize peace which IUMC believes is the world’s dream . This will join with millions around the world similarly observing International Peace Day.
Pastor Millie Carroll said, “The vigil will open with all singing ‘This World is Your World, This World is My World,’ followed by a peace quote by United Nations’ Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. After short peace quotes from many countries, hopefully representing all areas of the world, all will sing ‘We Shall Overcome’ The main thoughts will be about and quotes from Nobel Peace Prize recipient and President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. The short vigil will end with all singing ‘Let There Be Peace on Earth and Let it Begin with Me’ as the candlelight of peace is passed around the circle.”
Carroll added, “The candlelight peace vigil will be appropriate for all ages and younger children are urged to bring a flashlight to use as a candle.”
Following the vigil, during simple refreshments there will be a final opportunity to add messages or an additional one to the peace wall and peace banner before photos are sent of both to the United Nations to include in their peace records.
IUMC’s Church Council Chair Cris Lumanlam said, “World peace is so needed and it is very meaningful and important to be part of this world-wide event being observed by millions around the world. We now hope to observe it every year.”
The International Day of Peace was established by the United Nations in1981 at the opening of the U.N. sessions.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said this year’s International Day of Peace is extra significant because it comes at the same time as the world’s largest anti-poverty campaign meeting. That summit of many world leaders will also be held at the United Nations in New York City.
The Immanuel United Methodist Church is on Chalan Kanoa Drive and Barbara Avenue, east of Town Center and Beach Road, near Mt. Carmel Cathedral. For further information, contact Millie Carroll at 322-6158.
