Kilili: Up close and personal

Today, we will look at the “other” — and more personal — side of Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan, the CNMI’s first delegate to the United States House of Representatives.

This reporter asked him about  his “favorites” and these were his answers:

Color:

Black and white

Food:

I like adobo, donuts, hamburger.

Expression:

Just smile.

Clothes to wear at home:

Shorts pants and T-shirt

Television Show:

News, I constantly watch news.

Actor:

Sean Connery and Marlon Brando because they’re very exceptional actors.

Actress:

Annette Bening because she too is an exceptional actress.

Song:

“Imagine” by John Lennon because it is full of hope and vision.

Breakfast:

Donut

Lunch:

Sandwich but if there’s a nearby restaurant I go for soba.

Dinner:

I guess adobo but that doesn’t mean every day.

Wine:

I don’t drink at all. I prefer soda.

Brand of clothes:

Levi’s. I also like loafers because they’re very comfortable.

Books:

Generally I like thrillers. And I like lots of authors.

Sablan usually starts working at 4 a.m. every day and sleeps when his work is done.

“I used to walk every day and I used to go to the gym every day but I have no time now,” he said.

Before going to bed, Sablan usually reads a book until he gets sleepy.

During the holidays, if there are no appointments, he stays at home to spend time with his family.

Among his fondest childhood memories is the time he spent in Chuuk as a student of the Jesuit-run Xavier High School.

“I was treated very well,” he said.

Sablan is an only son and is married to Andrea. He has six children and five grandchildren.

He said he learned a lot from his parents and grandparents.

“My grandmother, my father’s mother, was one of the sweetest people I knew in my life. She was always there for us,” he said.

His maternal grandfather, he added, was a hard worker and religious man.

“We go to church at 5 a.m. early in the morning on Sunday. That’s the only time my grandfather went to the village because he lived on the farm.

He was stern and valued hard work,” Sablan said.

The most important value he learned from his elders is the “sense of family.”

“Although we have some differences, we help each other — not only the members of our immediate family but even those of our extended family,” he said.

Sablan rarely goes to parties but he always attends funerals.

“I want to show my condolences support and prayer. I’m not a fun guy — if I have a choice between going to a party and working, I’ll choose work.”

Asked how he defines love, Sablan, 58, said: “Andrea.”
