3 NMC graduates pass NCLEX on first try
(NMC) — Three recent graduates of Northern Marianas College recently took and passed the
extremely challenging National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses.
Leo Valeros, Mary Rose Alvarez, and Ji Hyun (Jin) Kim, all of whom graduated from NMC just a few months ago, took the exam in October and passed on their first attempt.
“The entire nursing department is extremely proud of these students as taking the exam and passing on the first try is quite a feat in itself,” said nursing instructor Pasquana Calvo. “Their accomplishment is a testament to their determination to succeed in the medical field.”
The NCLEX tests an individual’s nursing knowledge, skills, and abilities essential to the safe and effective practice of nursing at the entry level.
The exam is used by nursing boards in all 50 United States and all U.S. territories to award nurse licenses.
Licensed nurses may have their credentials endorsed by a state or territory’s board upon meeting that board’s requirements without having to retake the exam.
The three graduates were active members in the college’s Nursing Club and donated much of their time and effort into promoting and assisting in the club’s many community health awareness events.
After graduation, they jumped straight into studying and reviewing for the NCLEX.
“The college uses the NCLEX as one of its key performance indicators to help us gauge teaching effectiveness and student achievement,” said NMC President Dr. Carmen Fernandez. “For the past several years, Nursing graduates from Northern Marianas College have consistently surpassed the national average in passage rates.”
She added, “We are extremely proud of Leo, Mary, and Jin. Their hard work and preparation for the test have paid off and now they are ready to move into successful careers in a field they are passionate about.”
The newly licensed nurses are presently seeking employment at various clinics and hospitals on the island.
They also plan on furthering their education and developing their skills as nurses.

NMI names Kwang Joong Kim honorary tourism ambassador
(MVA) — “My heart is still here.” That is how strongly Kwang Joong “KJ” Kim feels about the Northern Marianas that have bestowed on him this week the title of honorary tourism ambassador.
After serving as general manager of Asiana Airlines in the Northern Marianas from 2005 to June 2009, Kim has most recently been drawing attention to the islands as the new general manager of the airline’s golf package task force in Seoul.
Since his reassignment from the islands in July 2009, Kim has been instrumental in developing “Golf Picnic,” a golf package that has already sold to almost 1,400 golfers since it started last month.
Kim said the qualities that endear the Northern Marianas to him are many of the same characteristics that attract golfers from Korea.
“It’s beautiful, it’s peaceful, it’s safe,” he said. “Korean golf courses are very busy, and you can only play foursomes. Sometimes people want to enjoy golf with just their wife or a friend, so Saipan is ideal for them.”
With five years experience living and working in Saipan, Kim is also often the go-to guy when his parent company or other publishers are planning a story about the Northern Marianas.
Kim shared a number of recent articles in major economic, travel, and other publications that were recently published promoting the islands as a tourist destination for golf and other activities.
While one full-page article alone was valued at $80,000, the estimated exposure value of all the recent articles is close to $300,000.

ON Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2009, Cub Scout Pack 913 held its second Raingutter Regatta, which is
the sailboat equivalent of the Pinewood Derby, a media release stated.
Each of the Pack’s eight Cubs constructed a sailboat from a kit consisting of a seven-inch long balsa wood hull, a 6-1/2 inch mast, plastic sail, plastic rudder, and metal keel.
