MHS freshmen orientation

During this orientation, parents and students will participate in campus tours, will meet the teachers, and will follow the class schedule of your child.  After visiting all of your child’s classes and teachers, Marianas High School will provide lunch in the cafeteria.  During lunch, we will be taking photographs for your child’s school identification card to be distributed in September.

We invite all parents/legal guardians of incoming 9th grade students to attend with your child this important Freshmen Orientation.  If you have any questions, please call 237-3206.

Applications for PIC scholarship now available at NMC

(NMC) — Application forms for the Pacific Islands Club Saipan Scholarship are now available for pick up at Northern Marianas College’s financial aid office and will be made available for download at NMC’s Web site at www.nmcnet.edu by the end of the week. The deadline to submit the application and all other required documents is July 2, 2010.

The PIC Saipan Scholarship will be providing seven NMC students $500 a semester for up to three semesters.

The college offers associate’s degrees in business administration, liberal arts, nursing, natural resource management, criminal justice, and hospitality management.

The scholarships are based on merit and financial need and will be awarded to the recipient on the bases of the candidate’s community involvement, academic background, letters of recommendation, and a written essay. An interview may also be required.

To be eligible, a student must be a U.S. citizen (or green card holder) and a CNMI resident for the past three years; be accepted and enrolled as a full-time student at NMC; have a high school or college cumulative GPA of 2.00 or better; and, be able to demonstrate financial need.

The purpose of the scholarship is to promote higher education by providing financial assistance for college students in their pursuit of professional careers, to help alleviate the critical current and future shortage of skilled and trained workforce for the CNMI, and to provide current public and private sector employees with opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills and enhance their career and professional development.

Red flag at 2 Saipan sites

(DEQ) — The Division of Environmental Quality says water samples collected from DPW Channel Bridge and Garapan Beach Drainage contained excessive concentrations of fecal indicator bacteria that exceeded the CNMI’s marine water quality standards.

DEQ has given the location a red flag and advises the public not to fish or swim within 300 feet of the location for the next 48 hours or until otherwise notified.

Military to conduct training   on FDM, south of Guam

(EMO) — The U.S. military will conduct training on  Farallon De Mendenilla and South of Guam.

The schedule dates and time are as follows:

• May 3, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. – Farallon De Mendenilla

• May 4-5, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. – South of Guam

Due to the danger imposed by this activity, Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is advising the general public, especially fishermen, commercial pilots and marine tour operators, to stay away from this area during the time and dates indicated.

ANGIL DESIGN SUPPORTS THE HUMANITIES.

Ron Smith of Angil Design Inc., left, presents a donation in the amount of $500 to the NMI Council for the Humanities.  Accepting on behalf of the council are board member Joann T. Aquino and board chairman Charles P. Reyes Jr.  The council will use the donation to support its public programs and educational initiatives.

GARAPAN CLEANUP.

Nearly 100 volunteers of the Japan Saipan Travel Association, the Marianas Visitors Authority, the Korean Tour Association of Saipan and the Hotel Association of the Northern Marianas turned out April 26 to get a jumpstart on May Tourism Month with a tourism industry cleanup.  The group collected over 400 pounds of trash in the main tourist district and beaches of Garapan.

TEEN TALK CONDUCTS TWEEN TALK TRAINING.

On April 17, Teen Talk, a youth part of the Public School System’s youth development program, trained 5th to 8th grade students from Kagman Elementary School, Oleai Elementary School, San Antonio Elementary School, William S. Reyes Elementary School and Hopwood Junior High School.  The training topics were team building, social and cultural competency, and presentation skills.
