More peace celebrations at United Methodist Church

Fun and educational peace games are again planned for Sunday, Sept. 19, from noon to 2 p.m. Last Sunday young and old especially enjoyed making peace cranes, peace balloons, peace thaumatropes, peace banner, peace wall, peace face painting (with washable allergic-free face paint). Puzzles, memory games, “holding up the world” were some —all with peace emphasis.

Part of the fun was hearing children’s comments.  Several said to Digna Gannaban who was directing the love and peace balloons, “I’ll never get those hearts inside my balloon — but look now I did!”  Some giggled and said: “I really want a peace symbol on my face but this brush tickles.” Another about the World Peace puzzle (pictured above) “You know, if one part of the world is missing then that is a big problem.  I want the world whole!” Another: “I’d never made a thaumatrope (comes from Greek word meaning “wonder” and “to turn”) and it’s fun to see my two sides become one picture.”

IUMC Pastor Millie Carroll said, “In addition to this Sunday’s peace games, IUMC invites everyone to again gather at IUMC on the actual International Peace Day, Tuesday Sept. 21, 7-7:30 p.m. for a Candlelight Peace Vigil. People who haven’t had a chance to add a message to the peace wall or peace banner can still do so after the service. Photos of both will be sent to the United Nations to add to their peace records. This enables Saipan to be a part of this important world-wide event.”

“We haven’t found records of Saipan previously observing International Peace Day and it’s exciting to be part of this important world-wide celebration,” said IUMC member Annie Tumamao. She and Ellen Tabago helped children create a simple peace centered snack last Sunday and will again on the 19th.

The International Day of Peace has been observed around the world every year since it was established by the United Nations in 1981.

Carroll added, “The candlelight vigil and all events and activities are non-political, non-religious, not against any specific war — only emphasizing peace which we think most of the world so hopes for. The candlelight vigil will include famous short peace reading from various parts of the world and singing.”

All Saipan is invited to the free peace games and activities on Sunday, Sept. 19, noon to 2 p.m. and the Candlelight Peace Vigil on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 7 to 7:30 p.m. Immanuel United Methodist Church in Chalan Kanoa is on Chalan Kanoa Drive and Barbara Avenue (east of Town Center and Beach Road, near Mt. Carmel Cathedral). For further information, contact Millie Carroll at 322-6158.
