The newly hired instructor is no stranger to NMC. Cepeda obtained her bachelor’s in science degree in elementary education from NMC in November 2006, and went on to earn her master’s degree in International Education from Framingham State University in December 2008. In addition, Cepeda recently became certified in American Sign Language.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome another qualified instructor to NMC,” said acting interim President Barbara Merfalen. “We are very proud to welcome back one of our graduates.”
Soon after receiving her degree from NMC, Cepeda began teaching sixth grade at Oleai Elementary School. Cepeda also served as advisor for the school’s student council and as secretary for the Faculty Club. During the following summer, she worked as a summer language arts instructor at Saipan Southern High School.
Although Cepeda taught for the CNMI Public School System, she remained actively involved at NMC. She has assisted NMC’s Community Development Institute, a program under the Division of Community Programs and Services, with teaching condensed courses related to elementary education and Praxis I review for NMC students and PSS teachers. Cepeda has also taught as an adjunct instructor for the NMC Summer and Fall 2010 semesters teaching education related courses, as well as English courses in the Fall 2009 semester.
“As an instructor for the School of Education, I am given the chance to stay within the profession I have dedicated myself to,” said Cepeda. “I feel that the experience I bring with me will be an asset to the students who have chosen the multi-faceted field of education.”
“Becoming a full-time instructor also allows me a wonderful opportunity to give back to my alma mater; I am looking forward to many years of service to the students, SOE, NMC and the CNMI community,” she added.
