Tinian Hot Pepper Festival on Feb. 13 and 14

(MVA) — One of the Northern Mariana Islands’ most popular celebrations, the seventh Annual Tinian Hot Pepper Festival, will be held on Feb. 13 and 14 at Tachogna Beach on the beautiful island of Tinian.

This cultural celebration of Tinian’s internationally coveted spicy pepper, locally known as “donni sali,” showcases locally prepared food products, arts and crafts, and island style entertainment by Northern Marianas young singers, band members, and dancers.

Visitors can compete in a variety of competitions, including the challenging hot pepper eating contest, and the “Estofao Pika” cooking contest.

Visitors can compete in a karaoke singing contest, a dragon boat race, or the chacha dance contest.

Children and adults alike will enjoy the hermit crab race. This year’s festival will also feature various vendor booths.

Food buffs will be especially interested in the challenging hot pepper eating contest, as well as the “Estofao Pika” cooking contest.

This Chamorro delicacy, a local version of chicken adobo, is made with fresh native chicken and many spices, with the primary one being the hot “donni sali.”

“This is one of the NMI’s highlights of the year,” Marianas Visitors Authority Managing Director Perry Tenorio said.  “Residents flock to this event — it’s a great place for tourists to really experience the Chamorro and Carolinian culture in a beautiful setting.”

Saipan-da plays Santa to visiting children

(MVA) — In the spirit of the holidays, a life-size Saipan-da played Santa Claus to children arriving on Saipan on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

The panda-inspired mascot greeted children at the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport on 26 flights arriving over the two-day period.

Over 600 children, 11 years old and under, also received a special Saipan-da backpack, courtesy of Saipan-da and his workshop at the Marianas Visitors Authority.

“One of our most delightful annual activities is to give a gift to children arriving at Christmas time,” said MVA Managing Director Perry Tenorio. “This treasured tradition puts a smile on both their faces — and ours — and helps make their visit to Saipan, Tinian and Rota even more memorable.”

MVA said Saipan-da is a popular figure among both children and adults in Japan and has helped build name recognition for the Saipan-Tinian-Rota destination.
