College hires new health instructor
(NMC) — Northern Marianas College recently hired a new health and physical education instructor in the science, health, mathematics, and athletics department.
Roland Merar, an educator for over 10 years, has taught at schools, such as Maris Stella School, Palau High School, and alau Community College. He holds extensive backgrounds in health, education, social studies, and music.
Merar is also a tireless advocate of the improvement of services and treatment for children with disabilities. He has been highly instrumental in the implementation of various physical therapy programs for students with disabilities and the raising of funds for the purchasing of assistive devices.
The newly hired instructor has also played key roles in many boards and committees, whose missions focused on enhancing the community’s health, educations, arts, and cultural preservation. These agencies include the Republic of Palau’s Ministry of Health, Ministry of Education, Mental Health Association Board, and the Tabesul Blengur (Balanced Diet) Committee.
“I am honored to have been selected for the position,” said Merar. “I look forward to working closely with the students and guiding them along their paths to success.”
Merar graduated with a master’s degree in educational leadership from San Diego State University and bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Guam.
Outside of the office and classroom, Merar is also actively involved in community activities, having represented Palau at tennis matches in the 2005 South Pacific Mini Games and serving in the Palau National Olympic Committee as both an athlete and a coach.
“We are pleased to welcome Roland to the NMC community,” said NMC President Carmen Fernandez. “His wealth of knowledge and experience will surely benefit the college and the CNMI community.”
Merar fills the position left vacant when Dr. Kurt Barnes retired in Aug. 2008.
NMC alumna to graduate from Gonzaga University
(NMC) — There is no question that Northern Marianas College continues to produce some of the finest and most talented college graduates.
This coming spring semester, Chellette San Nicolas, an alumna of NMC, will be graduating with a bachelor of arts in political science from Gonzaga University.
San Nicolas completed her associate of arts in liberal arts degree from NMC the same year she graduated from high school at Northern Marianas Academy, a college preparatory high school, in 2007.
“It was comforting to know that I was able to transfer a majority of my credits from NMC to Gonzaga,” said San Nicolas, who was able to transfer all but two classes taken at the college — philosophy and studio for non-majors.
Because of her minor in philosophy program at Gonzaga, San Nicolas was required to take the philosophy course there.
“The best thing about going to NMC was that I got to be prepared for some of the aspects of college life, most importantly when it came to important academic situations, like choosing and scheduling the right classes,” said San Nicolas.
After graduating from Gonzaga, San Nicolas plans to pursue a master’s degree in public administration and policy, a field about which she is extremely passionate.
Looking beyond that, she stated that law school may also be an option but her aim at the moment is to complete her master’s degree.
“Right now, my focus is on the next step because, like my dad says ‘Set a goal, achieve it, and then set another one,’” said San Nicolas.
NMC has played a major role in the great achievements of many of its alumni by thoroughly preparing its graduates for successful careers in a great range of professions.
“We are extremely proud of Chellette’s accomplishment,” said NMC President Carmen Fernandez. “We also applaud her continued efforts at Gonzaga and admire her future goals of attaining higher education.”
