IUMC hopes to publicly observe this important world-wide event every year.
Fun and educational peace games are planned from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12 and 19.
Making peace cranes, peace balloons, peace thumpatrops, peace banner, building a peace wall, peace face painting are among the many activities. All games will emphasize peace, sharing and friendship.
Peace symbol s can be painted on faces with washable allergic-free paint if people wish. Creating your own small peace snack is part of the celebrations. All are free.
IUMC Pastor Millie Carroll said, “IUMC invites everyone to again gather at IUMC on International Peace Day, Tuesday, Sept, 21, 7 to 7:30 p.m. for a Candlelight Peace Vigil.”
She said, “The vigil and all events and activities are non-political, non-religious, not against any specific war — only emphasizing peace which we think most of the world so hopes for. The candlelight vigil will include famous short peace readings from various parts of the world and singing.”
Carroll continued, “Saipan’s International Peace Day candlelight peace vigil on Sept. 21 will join with many others around the world similarly celebrating International Peace Day.”
The Day of Peace was established by the United Nations in 1981 at the opening of the U.N. sessions.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has said this year’s International Day of Peace is extra significant because it comes at the same time as the world’s largest anti-poverty campaign meeting. That summit of many world leaders will also be held at the United Nations.
Earlier this year, he called on young people around the world to take a stand for peace, to submit their stories and actions for peace to the United Nations.
Fourteen-year-old Mary Deala said, “Building the peace wall on Sept. 12 and 19 will give our Saipan youth, children and adults, the chance to be included. A photo of the messages on our peace wall will be sent to the United Nations.”
Immanuel United Methodist Church in Chalan Kanoa is on Chalan Kanoa Drive and Barbara Avenue, east of Town Center and Beach Road, near Mt. Carmel Cathedral.
