(PSS) — The CNMI Public School System Island Wide STEM Fair would like to congratulate all school-level winners for advancing to the state-level competition that was held Saturday, March 11, 2023 at Chacha Ocean View Middle School in Kagman, Saipan.
The competition hosted 111 public and private school students from kindergarten to 12th grade from Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
The Island Wide STEM Fair committee also extends a special thank you to the parents, teachers, administrators who guided the students.
In addition, the committee would like to share “our sincere appreciation to the volunteer judges, the Kagman High School JROTC, CNMI PSS AmeriCorps, Saipan Southern High School National Honor Society, Triple J Catering, Mariana Islands Nature Alliance, and Chacha Ocean View Middle School staff for their contributions toward a successful event.”
“Special thanks to Commissioner of Education Dr. Alfred Ada, Board of Education Teacher Representative Dr. Dora Miura, Office of Curriculum and Instruction Senior Director Jackie Quitugua, Accountability, Research, and Evaluation Senior Director Dr. Rizalina Liwag, Career and Technical Education Director Dr. Jessica Taylor, Interim Federal Programs Officer Jacqueline Che, the Facilities Development Management Office, and the State Infrastructure Technology Office for their continuous support,” the committee added.
The top student winners from the general STEM and high school research categories will compete in Guam’s Island Wide Science Fair, Thermo Fisher Scientific-Junior Innovative Challenge, and the International Science and Engineering Fair.

The CNMI winners are:
• High School Research International Science and Engineering Fair
First place — Yelin Hetina Park of Saipan International School for her research project, “Detecting Coral Bleaching in CNMI: via Machine Learning and Deep Learning.”
Second place — Mount Carmel School’s Eunkyu Hong, Ethan Militante, and Paul Santos’ research on “Pollution is not Equal To Solution.”
Third place — Marianas High School’s Precious Valerie, Steffanie Nicole Hann, and Angel May for “Paper de Musa.”
• Grades 9-12 General STEM
First place — Linxi Cai for her research work titled “Finding the effects of the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions on Saipan’s costal environment.”
Second place — Marianas High School’s Camille Alannah Sablan’s research on “Kills 99.9% of Bacteria ?!”
Third place — MHS student Gwanpil Son’s “Analyzing Muscle Activity.”

First place — Alexis Salundaguit of Hopwood Middle School for “Orally or Injected.”
Second place — Chacha Ocean View Middle School’s Vicente Jesus Leon Guerrero’s “The Power of Wind.”
Third place — Brilliant Star Montessori’s Selina Santiago for “Cleaning Dirty Water.”

First place — Tinian Elementary School’s Braiden Tutor for “Creating Biogas From Your Pantry.”
Second place — Sinapalo Elementary School’s Javier Sahagon for “Hydroponics: Growing without Soil.”
