2nd EU Film Fest in Palau

The 2nd EU Film Fest will feature seven movies from six European countries – Austria, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

According to Thomas Schubert, Honorary Consul of the Federal Republic of Germany to Palau, it is the second time that the European embassies in Manila organized the EU film fest in Palau.

“Last year we had a very successful event,” Schubert said. “Those who came the first night came every night. They really enjoyed the movies.”

On Thursday, there will be an opening ceremony at 5:00 at Koror State Assembly Hall. Schubert said, they hope that President Johnson Toribiong as well as representatives from European Union will grace the event.

This year’s selection varies from coming-of-age films like Germany’s “Blind Flyers” and Austria’s “Lapis Lazuli” to romance like Italy’s “The Fever”, and crime and mystery like France’s film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s “Towards Zero.”

“The earlier screening, the 6:30 movies, are geared toward the younger audience,” said Schubert. “While the 8:30 screening are for the more mature moviegoers.”

According to Schubert the movies are picked by each embassy. Every country’s Cultural Ministry nominates a film for the year, and they are forwarded to the embassies.

“These are very educational, award-winning movies that make you think, not just entertained,” added Schubert.

This year, EU Film Fest will be showing Germany’s “Blind Flyers” on June 10 at 6:30 p.m.; Austria’s “Lapis Lazuli” on the 11th at 6:30 p.m. and Czech Republic’s “Dark Blue World” at 8:30 p.m.; France’s “Towards Zero on the 12th at 6:30 p.m. and Italy’s “The Fever” at 8:30; and Spain’s “The Others” on the 13th at 6:30 p.m. and France’s “All is Forgotten” at 8:30 p.m.
