FOR their heroism, Tyric Castro, Mamet Manglona and Damian Atalig were recognized by Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, Rota Mayor Efraim M. Atalig, CNMI Homeland Security Emergency Management Special Assistant Dennis C. Mendiola and the Rota Municipal Council members on Aug. 9, 2022.
According to HSEM, on July 29, the three men saved an individual who got caught in the current.
Tyric Castro, Mamet Manglona, and Damian Atalig were fishing that day by the West Marina at Prudencio T. Manglona Park.
“Governor Torres and I are strong advocates of our people policing and helping each other, especially during our time of need,” HSEM Special Assistant Dennis Mendiola said.
“These three young heroes…demonstrated the principles and values instilled in them by their families,” he added.
“Although we caution people from putting their lives in danger, our culture and strong family values of protecting one another often trump protocol and procedures,” he said
“These three individuals’ act of courage will not be overlooked. As a matter of fact, when I presented the incident to Governor Torres, he insisted that we commend these young heroes in an effort to inspire and remind our community of the importance of helping one another in times of need,” Mendiola said.
“On behalf of the people of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, we thank you for your bravery and heroism in saving the life of a fellow citizen,” he told the three men.
“You have demonstrated tremendous value and character by putting your own life in danger to ensure the safety of another individual. We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your great deed, which does not go unnoticed,” Mendiola added.
