3,200 pounds of trash collected during island-wide cleanup on Saturday.

Volunteers on Saipan collected 3,200 pounds of trash during an island-wide cleanup on April 21 and 22.

This year’s trash collection, picked up by volunteers, government and private sector employees as well as non-governmental organizations, is 60% more than last year’s haul of 2,000 pounds of trash.

Division of Environmental Quality Director Zabrina Cruz thanked community members for their collaborative efforts during the cleanup.

“Every act counts, and every helping hand matters,” she said, adding that the event was successful because of “the united helping hands of all volunteers in the 39 designated cleanup spots.”

The data collected during the cleanup is entered into the Global Trash Database which is used for creating programs to solve the world’s ocean pollution problem.
