Amata meets with Coast Guard commandant

PAGO PAGO (Office of the American Samoa Congressional Delegate) — U.S. Congresswoman Uifa’atali Amata met Tuesday with the commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, Adm. Linda Fagan, to hear about the Coast Guard’s key role in American Samoa and the Pacific region, and tour Pago Pago Harbor’s shipyard facilities.

Fagan is responsible for all Coast Guard operations including 42,000 active-duty, 7,000 reserve, and 8,700 civilian personnel supported by 21,000 Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers.

“I’m delighted that Admiral Fagan was able to visit American Samoa in person, and I appreciate her historic leadership in this very important security role for us in American Samoa,” said Congresswoman Amata. “I am an advocate of an increased or permanent Coast Guard presence in Pago Pago Harbor, and I am happy the admiral saw our excellent natural harbor in person. The Coast Guard is a major element in the U.S. commitment to the Indo-Pacific region in these times, including here in the South Pacific.”

“I talk about the Coast Guard role often, as it secures many thousands of miles of coastal waters, extending far out into the Pacific, including the safety of travelers, trading partners, and the fishing fleet our economy depends on,” continued Amata. “The white hulls and famed stripe emblem of the cutters are iconic, with a history dating back to beginning development in the President John Kennedy administration. I’ve had Coast Guard briefings and updates over the years, and I so appreciate all that our nation’s Coast Guardsmen do for us.”
