HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — Four Guam high school students will have the opportunity to attend a transportation camp in Hawaii this summer.
The Pacific Summer Transportation Education Program National Summer Transportation Institute is hosted by the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Oahu, Hawaii.
“The camp will introduce students to transportation careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics through related activities, field trips and recreational events. Travel and housing accommodation costs are covered,” a press release from the governor’s office said.
The program is accepting applications for four spots at the camp.
“As we witness Guam’s transformation, we lean on our young leaders – your ideas, your passion and your skills, especially in the fields of STEM, to shape the very landscape of our future. We encourage you to apply today,” Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio said in the Adelup release.
The Hawaii-based STEM program will run from June 17 to June 28. The aim is to engage students through STEM in careers in transportation. It reflects the administration’s workforce development efforts, according to the release.
“Guam stands at the threshold of a transportation revolution. With the military buildup propelling our island’s growth, the need for innovative solutions in transportation has never been more pressing,” said Tenorio.
Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero said she was proud to see STEM moving full steam ahead for the island.
“Here at home, we are proud to see more curriculum at every age level focused on growing the STEM field. To extend the learning beyond our shores by partnering with the University of Hawaii, we will expand the lens of our future leaders of tomorrow,” said Leon Guerrero. “We thank our partners at the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Highway Administration, and the University of Hawaii for extending this program to Guam’s deserving students.”
Applications to participate in the program are accepted online at eng.Hawaii.edu/pacstep.
The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. April 30.
A presentation of certificates was held Aug. 1, 2023, at Adelup for students who participated in the National Summer Transportation Institute hosted by the University of Hawaii at Manoa from June 18-30, 2023, in Oahu, Hawaii.
