HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A bicyclist died from injuries sustained in a Barrigada traffic crash.
On Tuesday at about 9 p.m., Guam Fire Department units responded to a reported “auto versus bicycle accident” on Route 10 in Barrigada when a male, “possibly in his 50s,” was taken to Guam Memorial Hospital with serious injuries, said acting GFD spokesperson Cherika Mateo.
The Guam Police Department subsequently responded, and the Highway Patrol Division was activated and launched an investigation, according to a press release issued by GPD on Wednesday morning.
“A bicyclist was traveling on the median lane of Route 10 Barrigada by Jolene Leon Guerrero Street when the operator of a maroon vehicle (who) was traveling on the inner northbound lane collided with (the) bicyclist who encroached onto the inner northbound lane,” the release stated.
GPD further confirmed the bicyclist was taken to the hospital, where he was declared deceased by an attending physician.
As the investigation remains open, next of kin has yet to be identified, GPD added.
This is the first traffic-related fatality of 2024.
