Boat capsizes, 1 fisherman survive, 1 missing

Bureau of Public Safety Director Norvert Yano in a press briefing yesterday identified the missing fisherman as George Songino, 43, while the survivor was identified as Ilek Riumd.

Riumd was found Monday morning while hanging on to the capsized boat but his companion Songino is still missing.

Yano said police officers and divers are still searching for his body as of press time.

The incident was reported to the police Monday at 7:30 am but Riumd said they went on fishing Saturday morning between the reef of Airai and Koror.

While they were on the waters, the boat suddenly overturned at around 9 pm on Saturday.

Riumd managed to hold on to the boat while Songino was swept away.

Meanwhile, Yano said a woman was also rescued by police officers when her car landed in the waters Monday morning.

The woman identified as Alse Nestor, 31, was driving a black Terano when it fell out in the water between Jive Restaurant and PCS building office in Malakal.

The incident was reported to the police at 9:11 am, Monday.

Initial investigation disclosed that the woman was engaged in an argument with her boyfriend earlier and drove away afterwards.

The woman was pulled out of the water but didn’t want to come out in the water until she was taken by the current to the Long Island side.

She was rescued by the officers later.
