During the BTA General Membership Meeting held at the Palau Pacific Resort (PPR), BPS Deputy Director Jennifer Olegeriil discussed the cases of burglaries and thefts in hotels and how the have resolved it.
Olegeriil said that they are working with the Palau Visitors Authority (PVA), Hotels and other establishments.
She said that last months, they conducted a meeting with the hotel owners as well as the diving tour operators and discussed with them some safety tips and recommendation on how to prevent crimes. They also disseminated some brochures.
Olegeriil said that tourists are victimized by burglaries and thefts because suspects assumed they have money and stuff.. However, most of the tourists were victimized were resolved and has recovered their belongings.
Based on the statistics of burglaries and thefts of tourists for 2008 up to the present the case was 12 in 2008, nine in 2009 and also nine from January up to June 2010.
Olegeriil said that Palau is a Paradise Island and the BPS is doing its job to prevent crime against property.
Also mentioned at the meeting were the minor consumption of alcohol and underage driving.
The BPS, however, said that they intensified their patrolling and monitoring against those minor offenders.
