THE Chalan Kanoa Youth Center, which had been closed since Super Typhoon Yutu in Oct. 2018, has reopened.
“We’d been getting a lot of requests to re-open it, and thanks to the continued support from Gov. Ralph DLG Torres, some community leaders, and Youth Affairs staffers, we were able to push forward our plan to renovate the facility, bring it up to date, and to again serve the youth,” Youth Affairs Office Special Assistant Ali Ogo said.
On Thursday, Oct. 27, Youth Affairs held a reopening ceremony for the CK center. Among those who attended the event were Gov. Torres, Rep. Joseph Leepan T. Guerrero, his wife Victoria T. Guerrero, and Department of Public Works Secretary James Ada.
Father Ray Rosal, Mount Carmel Cathedral parish priest, led the blessing of the center.
Ogo said the center is operational but there are still minor renovations to be made.
He thanked community leaders, including Keith Ada and Eric Esteves, who took the initiative to renovate the basketball court.
Ogo said the center will be open Monday to Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will provide after-school programs, sports activities, and training sessions, he added.
“This center will not only serve as a safe haven for our community children, but also a beacon of light to steer our youth into positive development and quality education, career readiness, health, civic participation, leadership and general life skills to ensure their personal growth in a safe and beneficial manner,” Ogo said in his remarks.
Governor Torres, for his part, said he will make sure that resources are available for the center such as sports equipment.
“We want to make sure our children have a safe place where they can enjoy their time with each other, creating childhood memories that they can be proud of,” he added.
