THE Bureau of Environmental & Coastal Quality will organize several Environmental Awareness Month activities for the public.

On Monday, Gov. Arnold I. Palacios and Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang signed a proclamation  designating April as Environmental Awareness Month, whose theme is “Root for Earth.”

Zabrina Cruz, the director of the Division of Environmental Quality, offered her perspective on the theme.

“I interpret it in three ways: one, to cheer, praise and be thankful for the earth and the natural resources that sustain us and celebrate our planet,” she said. “The second is to root or plant ourselves to the earth like a tree, living in harmony with all living things. And third, it makes me think of our ancestral roots that connect us to our past, that allow us to bear fruits and seeds for future generations.”

Every Thursday and Friday throughout April, BECQ will offer tours of its environmental surveillance laboratory to island school children. To register for the event, school officials should call (670) 664-8500/20/42.

From April 9 to 11, environmental agencies and organizations across the island will participate in the Environmental Expo, where they will highlight conservation efforts, projects, and management practices they are undertaking. The event is open to high school juniors and seniors.

Two free family movie screenings are scheduled at American Memorial Park. On April 12 BECQ will screen “The Lorax,” and on April 26, “The Little Mermaid.”

For Rota and Tinian, the Division of Coastal Resources Management will host the Ridge to Reef Eco Camp for elementary school children. The camp runs from April 17 to 19 on Tinian and April 24 to 26 on Rota. Email [email protected] or call (670) 664-8300 for more information.

This year’s islandwide cleanup is scheduled for April 19 to 20.

Closing out this year’s Environmental Awareness Month is a K-12 recycling competition.
