Facts about the party
It is a political organization that was incorporated in 1958 by a few civic-minded local residents and identified as the Popular Party. Educational advancement and quality of life was the impetus that guided their harmonic consensus of political trail-blazing. Life was difficult back in the 1950s and these few individuals were driven to pursue an uncharted political destiny so that their fellow citizens can experience a better standard of living
Known back then colloquially as the “Pattidan I mamobli yan man ordinario na taotao Marianas,” the party continues to champion the cause of ordinary citizens. In the mid-1960s, after watching the progressive economic developments taking place on the island of Guam, whose leadership positions were held by Democrats, the increasing membership of the local political Popular Party organization decided to embrace the Democratic Party name, and subsequently an alliance with the Democratic Party of Guam was established for purposes of efforts towards the reunification of the islands.
The Democratic Party of the Northern Marianas has historically advocated for social justice, a need for educated citizenry, political stability, cultural preservation, and balanced economic developments that advance sound and practical policies which compliments the unique geographical characteristics of our islands including accentuating the cultural richness of our people.
The Democratic Party does not subscribe to the notion that economic developments are paramount over fundamental cultural rights and survival of its local population. It was also the practice of the Democratic Party to expound on the value of ethics and the virtue of public service by being guest speakers at the local elementary schools in the early days. People like Vicente N. Santos, Miguel Kileleman, Judge Felipe Salas, Judge Ignacio V. Benavente, Dr. Francisco Palacios, Santiago Magofna, Daniel Muna, Herman Q. Guerrero, Mitch Pangelinan, Mayor Vicente (Kilili) Sablan, former Municipal Council Speaker Vicente T. Camacho and many others were active stewards of the Democratic Party and what it stands for.
The Democratic Party through its dominant leadership in the Municipal Congress, Saipan District Legislature and the Congress of Micronesia were able to successfully push through these fundamental life-changing accomplishments: 1) $10 million payment for Second World War reparation, 2) Petition the Congress of Micronesia to secede from the Micronesian union, 3) Petition the United Nations Security Council to recognize the Mariana Islands inalienable rights of political self-determination, 4) Petition the United States to enter into separate political negotiation with the Marianas District, 5) Saipan District Legislature unanimous passage of a law establishing the Marianas Political Status Commission, 6) Included in its Covenant negotiation for a Commonwealth status was the Democrats “brainchild” of: a. Self-government, b. the right to administer our own immigration authority and policies, c. 7 year annual Covenant federal funding and d. to establish a Constitution of our own adoption, 7) Relentless campaign for the passage and ratification of the Covenant, 8) Established the constitutional structure of the CNMI government, 9) Lobbied U.S. Congress for private workforce rights to be paid livable wages (U.S. minimum wage).
So, if you have an ingenious idea that can change the quality of life for our citizens and need a platform to advance it or you are looking for an alternative political organization with a proud history and respect for the rule of law, the Democratic Party of the Northern Marianas, Inc. is the right choice. It is an inclusive political organization that welcomes anyone regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation, economic status, origin or physical challenges.
For more than 32 years, the people of the Commonwealth have been robbed of their bright future. Our people’s fundamental right to clean and honest government has been treated as an inferior political requirement.
We invite you to be part of a growing movement that would lay the foundation for a transformation in
CNMI governance premised on the basic obligation of public service. This is an exciting time to be a DEMOCRAT!
