According to witnesses, the driver of the car was drunk and was driving at a high rate of speed.
One witness, who was a passenger of the Terrano, said that he and his friends had stopped at the junction to make a legal turn to Ngaraard and unto Ngarchelong when the other car hit them.“The guy did not stop or slow down,” he said. “I heard tires screeching as he attempted to avoid us and I braced myself for the impact.”The driver of the car should have obeyed the posted road signs. He should have stopped completely before making either a right or a left turn at the junction. The witnesses estimate that the car could possibly have been traveling at 65 miles per hour or more.No one in the Terrano was seriously hurt; however, the driver did sustain minor knee scrapes. The Terrano did sustain damages. The driver of the car and one of his two passengers escaped the accident without injuries. However, his other passenger – speculated to be his live-in girlfriend – sustained serious knee injuries and had to be pried out of the car and transport in an ambulance to the hospital.Police and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) arrived at the scene of the accident shortly after it was reported.Witnesses further added that both the policeman (Officer Titus Ignacio) and EMTs (Maurice Towai and Milong Orrukem) should be commended for their assessment of the accident and for their professionalism.“The officers did their jobs extremely well,” a witness said. “They attended to the injured first before anything else, and I hope they would be the ones dispatched to any accident I might be involved in during my life-time.”The car was totaled and its driver cited for numerous violations. Its passengers were transported to the hospital for medical treatment and further examinations.
