The Phase 1 of the project was finished early this year. According to Ngardmau Gov. Akiko Sugiyama, there’s a small road connecting the village to the Compact Road, and the proposed Phase 2 Road Project will continue connecting that road to the Phase 1 project that’s already finished.
President Johnson Toribiong and Republic of China (ROC) Ambassador to Palau Maggie Tien together with some government officials and traditional and state leaders were present during the groundbreaking ceremony.
The $450,000 funding comes from the Taiwan 2010 Stimulus Grants. But Sugiyama said she is not sure if the amount will be enough to finish the road project.
“But they have promised to try and look for the money to finish the 1,680 ft project,” Sugiyama said in an interview.
She added that they are very happy that the project has finally started.
“The road will be a big help for us in going to the village,” Sugiyama said. “The village people are also very happy. Some people have to buy two to three spare tires every year because of the bad road.”
Sugiyama said the project should be finished by end of December this year.
