Corrective actions taken following Marpi fatality, says Covid-19 task force chief

FOLLOWING a fatal vehicular accident on Dec. 9, 2021 at the former Mariana Resort quarantine facility in Marpi, CNMI Covid-19 Task Force Chair Warren F. Villagomez said corrective actions are being implemented.

“We [are] making sure an incident like this doesn’t happen [again],” he added. “We [created an] additional leadership level to be present on-site to make sure that staff are adhering to policies and procedures on the site.”

A woman died and two others were injured after a Gator utility vehicle flipped over at the Mariana Resort quarantine facility on Dec. 9.

The three worked at the quarantine facility.

Before the incident, the vehicle operator was recklessly driving the utility vehicle, and she and the passengers had been drinking, Variety learned.

Police did not identify the persons involved in the accident.

Villagomez said the task force and CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management are the responsible agencies for the site.

The person responsible for task force personnel at the site is Jack Sablan.

Villagomez said  as of Tuesday, Dec. 21, the government-designated  quarantine site for certain inbound passengers was the former Mariana Resort, while Kanoa Resort Saipan and the Pacific Islands Club Saipan were being used solely for isolation of individuals who tested positive for Covid-19.

As for manpower, Villagomez said: “The numbers are pretty steady. Of course, we can’t predict what’s going to happen in the next hour or so…so basically, we run on shifts and we are mindful of our spending as well as scheduling to make sure that we also provide rest to [the staff] because at the end of the day, it equates to safety.”
