THE Commonwealth Ports Authority board of directors on Thursday approved an environmental policy that is in line with the Biden administration’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050.
The policy seeks to “address the threats created by climate change and continued dependence on fossil fuels.”
Its primary aim “is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the implementation of strategies that enhance energy efficiency, reduce CPA’s impact on the climate, and utilize renewable resources for the benefit of the CNMI’s natural environment and for the well-being of all current and future CNMI citizens.”
The CPA “is committed to providing transportation, a terminal, and other facilities of commerce in an environmentally sound manner. To fulfill this policy, CPA is specifically committed to enhancing and promoting compliance with environmental legal requirements, environmental stewardship, environmental justice, continuous improvement, and stakeholder communication and collaboration.”
CPA stated that it is “committed to compliance with all applicable environmental and energy requirements, including environmental legislation, relevant guidelines, and codes of practice that apply to its facilities and operations.”
CPA also commits to being “an environmental steward by taking action to protect, manage, and monitor the facilities and operations at CPA ports for the protection of the environment.”
An autonomous government agency, CPA runs the Francisco C. Ada/Saipan International Airport, the Benjamin Taisacan Manglona International Airport on Rota, the Tinian airport and the seaports on the three islands.
