Palau was also a recipient of development aid from the Czech Republic in 2007 which focused on supply of dental equipment and support for the Czech dentist working at the hospital’s dental clinic. Some of the funds were used to purchase mobile dental equipment needed for the provision of dental care in outer islands of Palau.
The objectives of the development aid is to improve the current facilities in order to provide better health service and help support and sustain the Czech dentist brought to Palau in January 2007. In early 2006, Ambassador Ludva came to Palau to meet with President Remengesau and Minister Temmy Shmull to request for Palau’s support at the United Nations for Czech Republic’s candidature to the Non-Permanent Seat of the UN Security Council. During his visit the Ambassador agreed to cooperate with his government to provide technical assistance and to support Palau by providing dentists to assist the Palau National Hospital.Dental equipment that is to be purchased from the Czech ODA funds has been identified by the clinic as necessary one following the hospital’s strategic plan – resources are to be provided to the department in order to help the dental clinic achieve its milestone goal in terms of equipment as well as in term of support of the Czech dentist. Part of the Human Resource plan of the Ministry of Health is to have at least one foreign expert a year which will bring in new methods and skills. This will help elevate the general level of services offered as well as to train the local dental staff with new approaches. The overall objective is of the Czech aid is to assist the development of the dental services in Palau and to ensure its sustainability in direct follow up of the previous project.
