DCRM Summer Internship Program now accepting applications

THE Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality-Division of Coastal Resources Management is looking for 15 summer interns who are interested in learning about coral reef and coastal zone management. Applicants must be college students or college-bound high school graduates.

The summer interns will be paired with experienced mentors at a local environmental agency on Saipan, including, but not limited to, DCRM, the Division of Environmental Quality, the Micronesia Islands Nature Alliance, the Division of Fish and Wildlife, and the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration.

The DCRM Summer Internship Program, formerly known as the Coral Reef Initiative Summer Internship, aims to raise community awareness of coral reef and coastal zone issues, threats, and the efforts underway to protect them.

Participants are provided with opportunities to gain hands-on experience in resource management, and are encouraged to pursue an education and/or career in environmental conservation.

Internship opportunities include shoreline monitoring, education and outreach; wildlife conservation, marine monitoring, watershed management, laboratory surveillance, and more.

The 15 interns will be selected through an interview process and, when selected, will work 20 hours a week from June to August at a rate of $10 an hour.

In addition to working on a CNMI-specific conservation project, each intern must write a news article and present on their completed project.

Since 2002, over 100 students have completed this summer program, gaining experience in local environmental conservation efforts.

Roughly 25% of current DCRM staff are former summer interns, while numerous other former interns have taken on jobs at DEQ, DFW, and MINA, among others.

To be considered for this summer internship, interested individuals must submit a CNMI employment application, cover letter, résumé or curriculum vitae, unofficial or official transcript, two letters of recommendations from instructors and/or employers only; a police clearance from within the last three months; and a copy of a valid photo identification, such as a driver’s license or passport.

All interested applicants must be eligible to work for the CNMI government.

A CNMI employment application can be found at www.cnmiopm.net

The application deadline is Friday, March 25, 2022.
