Defendant in meth case wants to be released to 3rd-party custodian

HONGJIE Li, through court-appointed attorney David Banes, has requested the federal court for a detention hearing continuance to secure a third-party custodian for the defendant.

District Court for the NMI Magistrate Judge Heather Kennedy scheduled a continuance for May 13 at 3:30 p.m.

Li, and her co-defendants, Huaishu Wang and Yongbing Ni, were each charged with one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute a federally controlled substance, and conspiracy to maintain drug-involved premises.

As for Wang and Ni, Judge Kennedy granted the request of Assistant U.S. Attorney Garth Backe for the two defendants’ detention.

Wang, represented by attorney Janet King, and Ni, represented by attorney Robert Torres, informed the court that “at this time,” there are no third-party custodians for them.

Torres also requested that Ni be scheduled for a medical appointment.

For his part, Banes requested further information on Li’s medications.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency earlier executed a search warrant and seized methamphetamine, money, and drug paraphernalia from the defendants at what the authorities said was a drug den in Papago.
