THE driver of the pickup truck that hit a pedestrian on Middle Road in Puerto Rico early Saturday morning was arrested by the police for driving under the influence of alcohol, the Department of Public Safety said Monday.
Variety obtained the name of the driver — a 28-year-old local man — but was unable to get a confirmation from the criminal division of the Attorney General’s Office.
In a statement, DPS said on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at about 5:29 a.m., it dispatched officers to an auto-pedestrian collision in Puerto Rico. Officers and medics were also dispatched to the scene, DPS added.
“At the scene, officers observed a red pickup truck resting on the northbound outer lane with extensive damage to the front portion of the vehicle and an injured pedestrian on the ground beneath the front portion of the vehicle. Medics transported the 22-year-old local male to the Commonwealth Health Center to be admitted for observation,” DPS stated.
It added that “officers on the scene detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from the operator of the vehicle. A standard field sobriety test was administered to the 28-year-old local male before he was arrested and taken to DPS for further DUI processing.”
DPS said the crash is under further investigation. “At this time the pedestrian remains at CHC for observation.”
