Driver charged with vehicular negligence in Dededo crash

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — If convicted, a woman faces 15 years in prison for her alleged involvement in a car crash in which five people were hurt and both cars needed to be towed because of damage.

On Friday at about 8:59 p.m., Guam Police Department officers responded to a crash with injuries on Ysengsong Road by La Familia Mart in Dededo where Guam Fire Department medics were on the scene tending to occupants of two different vehicles.

A witness then told police that the driver of a Nissan Altima, Rina Walder Unnuno, a 22-year-old woman, did not stop at the stop sign entering Ysengsong Road, court documents state.

“The Nissan Altima then collided with a Nissan Sentra, causing both cars to spin out of control. The occupants of the Nissan Altima then exited the car and began throwing beer cans out of the vehicle,” according to the charging documents.

Unnuno’s passenger was a male minor who complained of pain and was taken to the hospital by a medic. There were five occupants in the Sentra, which included a 2-month-old child. According to court documents, the adult passengers in the Sentra complained of pain, and both vehicles needed to be towed and “sustained disabling damages.”

Once officers made contact with Unnuno, she allegedly smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot, watery eyes and her vehicle smelled of marijuana.

“The defendant told police that she consumed a tall can of Budweiser beer and a can of Cass beer. The defendant stated that she attempted to brake as she approached the stop sign but lost control of the vehicle. The defendant admitted she does not have a driver’s license,” according to court documents.

Officers did not conduct a standardized field sobriety test due to the “nature and severity” of the crash. However, Unnuno’s blood alcohol content level was 0.033%.

Unnuno was charged with five counts of vehicular negligence as third-degree felonies and faces 15 years in prison if found guilty of the charges, according to the Office of the Attorney General.
